Our Business Story
Hi, My name is Merveena Wing
and this is the story of our family business and a
tribute to two wonderful people My Parents
Althea Bernhardt & Albert Rossell
Althea was born in rural Hoskins NE in 1907. Her family had a farm
there. She had finished the eighth grade in school when her family moved to
Cheyenne Wells, CO in 1923 and then to Denver in 1924.
She had one sister and two brothers and a step brother that came from
Germany who her parents adopted.
The economy forced everyone in the family to work.
At the age of 16 she got a job at the 5 & 10 cent store,
F .W. Woolworth near the boarding house where she
lived.
She also did housework for room and board. It took
about two years before her family was able to have a
house and live together again.
She was promoted to do office work in the
downtown store and continued to work there for 25 years.

She also loved to crochet and tat, and at the young
age of 93 started a card business with a friend.
Albert was born in Harrisburg PA in 1911. His father
was in construction and moved around more than most
families. He had 3 brothers and two sisters. The family
moved to Gainsville, Florida in 1914 where he spent most
of his early life.

They had one child, me
My mother retailed the products to friends and acquaintances. And when
their business grew my father took care of the distributors that came by the
house to pick up their products. They both enjoyed people, it seemed that the
house was a constant gathering of friends.
The coffee pot was always on. The distributors would get their
products from our home warehouse, drink a cup of coffee or two
and talk about what
Nutrilite™ did for them,  their new customers,
and the latest information they had gathered about vitamins and
minerals. My parents both believed very strongly that you are what
you eat. They became Nutrilite™ Key Directs.
In 1960, my parents convinced me that I needed to be a
distributor, my husband was in the United States Marine
Corps  and we had five children, all girls. We lived aboard a
military base.  In 1964 our family grew to eight, we added
another child, a boy. I used all the products but selling them
to others did not seem to work for me at that time.

and Dad
In 1973 Nutrilite™ and Amway™ joined, the marketing plans were similar and
although there was a period of adjustment we became Amway Home Products
Direct Distributors.
In 1976, after 30 years of service, my husband retired
and we returned to Denver. I joined my parents in the
business. My father decided that since it now was the
three of us, we needed a name, and we became “Wing
Enterprises”.
My father died April 12, 1995 at the age of 84.
Mother and I continued with the business until her
death, September 23, 2002, at the age of 94. They
both believed that Nutrilite™, positive thoughts, mental
and physical activity kept them healthy.

Albert was a Golden Gloves Boxer Champion in 1934
,and In 1940 went to work for the Denver Rio Grand Western Railroad
where he continued to work until a train accident in December of 1968.
He joined the army at 17 and was stationed in Hawaii.
Unfortunately he had a problem with asthma and it became a
real problem and was discharged with a disablity. His father
told him "Go to Colorado, the asthma will never bother you
there".
      After he arrived in Denver
he  got a job at  F W Woolworth in the stockroom.
They became involved with  Nutrilite™ food supplements in 1947.
In 1950 while working with a crew in the mountains to set a train car
back on the track my father was knocked off the top of the car and
tumbled down the mountain. He was badly injured.

After his recovery he returned to work, but in1968 while on
another train going down a steep grade the engine derailed and ran
into a mountain side. He and the Fireman were buried for 4 hours.

His recovery took some time and he was unable to return to
railroading. My mother continued working for F.W. Woolworth at
several different stores for a total of 35 years of service.
Mother began eating Nutrilite™ in 1047. I remember the
little green box with the capsules and the tablets in it because
she and Dad took them everyday.
They lost track of the individual that introduced them to
Nutrilite™, but managed to find distributors on and off through
the years. In 1956 a dear friend and distributor convinced
them to look into the business.
Because of the integrity of the company and that
particular individual they joined the ranks of
Nutrilite™
Distributors, and began building their business by developing
a retail business and servicing their customers.
